CONFERENCE: HS2 – The value and experience of NFDC accredited contractors

A highlight not to be missed, join Costain-Skanska’s Tom Cleary on 16th September in the Demo Expo Zone Conference Theatre to hear a client’s insights of working with NFDC accredited contractors. A teaser for what to expect is below…

Demolition works involve a number of high-risk activities – from soft strip and asbestos removal to structural demolition, often with third party constraints that require complex engineering solutions to protect the people and assets around us. The consequences of getting something wrong, as witnessed over recent years, can be severe and none more so than working on HS2. A highly visible, scrutinised and politicised undertaking, the smallest thing can quickly find itself under the microscope.

Alongside this, HS2 have committed themselves to being the standard bearer in driving industry standards across the board, be that technical expertise, health and wellbeing, safety or the environment. As CSjv, we know that HS2 could choose from any large number of contractors to support them building their new railway. Putting piles in the ground, earthworks, pouring concrete etc. is the easy bit and for an organisation like HS2 they see this as a given and this is likewise for demolition.

What HS2 and CSjv are looking for is help in, is not only demolishing an old carriage shed, a former university building a block but doing it in a way that minimises the impact on local communities through quieter less intrusive means or removing wagons from local road networks, reducing the number of hours that people are at risk of accident or injury or minimising the environmental impact of our works through innovative measures that reduce our carbon footprint.

Leveraging the value and experience of NFDC accredited contractors give us and HS2 confidence that we are procuring high quality supply chain partners, that can deliver the bottom line – safe and complex solutions to demolition works and support us in our continued drive to push accepted industry standards to the next level.

THOMAS CLEARY

Currently Costain-Skanska joint venture’s Head of Delivery for Route on HS2’s Enabling Works Contract – South, Tom has been with Costain since 2011, working on major contracts for clients such as Highways England (M1 J10-13 Smart Motorway), Network Rail (London Bridge Station Redevelopment) and HS2 (Enabling Works Contract – South).

Tom has worked with Demolition specialists on each project, with London Bridge as his first real exposure but ramping up on HS2 – overseeing circa £100m of let contracts in demolition alone. Tom works directly with clients on HS2 and is well placed to provide a corridor of understanding, knowledge and expectations between those within their client organisation and their valued supply chain partners.

Tom has a real passion for innovation and has a front row seat in witnessing the development in the demolition industry first-hand, with some fantastic innovative projects that deliver a first-class service for Costain Skanska and their clients.
